That's awesome! Whales & turtles are definitely my favourite marine animals. Whale sharks are beautiful too.
I did a research paper on whale sharks in the fifth grade. I was that obsessed. My liking for the science of marine life started with my unhealthy obsession with studying dinosaurs. To this day I'm still fascinated both by dinos and marine animals without out chance of satisfying it.
I did mine on amazon river dolphins. They're pink, so it's not like I could resist. Dinosaurs are a really interesting topic as well, and it makes sense how it lead you to marine life. I'm not sure where my interest came from, I just always loved swimming and marine life. I grew up on an island so had constant access to the beach, so maybe that!
Dolphins are really fascinating creatures, too, especially considering their ability to fend off and kill sharks attempting to prey on them. It could be anything number of things that drew you to marine life, but being by the water has the capacity to give you some inspiration. I know when I used to live in Newfoundland I had a larger interest in nature. But now, being in urban America, that interest is seldom something I can explore because there's not much nature around me like there used to be.
I didn't know you lived in Newfoundland! Such a beautiful place. I spent most of my time at the beach growing up and interacting with jellyfish, seals, squid, and the occasional dolphin from a distance. I took some oceanography courses which definitely gave me a newfound passion for marine life and conservation.
Yeah, I was born in Newfoundland! That's a wonderful experience, Rose! Being able to observe nature in its most gracious forms can be a breath-taking and eye-opening experience in its own right. I remember when I was young I was afraid of the ocean (hydrophobia) for a time, but I was taught how to swim by my father and then learned to embrace the animals in the ocean to cope with it. Now I'm able to swim, albeit not in the saltwater ocean as it irritates my skin. But, if I ever got the chance to scuba dive in a coral reef, I would without a doubt.
That sucks that the water irritates your skin, I'm the opposite, do better in salt water then in treated pools which I have reactions to That's definitely one of the things on my bucketlist! It would be an incredible experience.
Yeah. go to Sao Miguel and find Moby Dick Tours in Ponta Delgada. Defenitly the best Whale Watching company out there and the cheapest on the Island too.
